Italian eateries are seemingly more commonplace with every passing year in Dongguan. I firmly believe that to make it in the F&B industry these days takes a combination of impressive food, good customer service and a decent location. Safe to say my recent visit to “Hostaria” convinced me that all three are accounted for.
For those who have never heard of the restaurant, it is situated smack bang in the middle of Dongcheng Bar Street making it very easy to find. Upon entering one gets the immediate sensation of fine dining ambience. Quaint pictures of old movie stars from by-gone eras adorn the classic red brickwork and I instantly felt comfortable in the place.
As it was Friday evening, I took advantage of their buy-one-get-one-free offer on Aperitivo Italiano drinks to settle in. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this offer also included cicchetti. After sipping the delightfully presented strawberry aperitif and nibbling at the bread, I began perusing the extensive menu, where my suspicions were confirmed that this was high-end gourmet cuisine.
I commenced by ordering the beef ravioli accompanied by smoked burrata cheese, which was eloquently served on a display tray with fresh rocket. The two flavors complemented each other exquisitely and, saving myself for the main, I must confess to keeping half the cheese to take home. The mains came promptly after the appetizer was finished and again, both were presented immaculately.
I opted for the wagyu steak served with roasted potatoes while my partner had grilled chicken breast with creamy mash. She commented the chicken was tasty and the mash was “to die for.” After trying a mouthful, I noticed that it had been whipped into submission to the point where it melted in the mouth, leaving a milky, buttery, almost nutty aftertaste. The beef was cooked to perfection, slightly pink in the center, however, I was a little disappointed with the roasted potatoes, which for me were a tad too “al dente.”
I left Hostaria well sated and will undoubtedly return to sample more of what they have to offer. It may be a bit pricey, but in an establishment such as this, you really are paying for top quality.
